Ari Davidow posted Digital Habitats
I've just been listening to a presentation on the DuraSpace community by Val and Thorny, and wanted to mention an excellent new book called "Digital Habitats" which focuses on toolsets used by Communities of Practice. Book details and an occasional blog can be found at http://technologyforcommunities.com/ I am hoping to rope the authors in to a discussion on the WELL's public space (now featuring a talk about an early community and educa...... Ari Davidow left a note for Rich Cherry

Hi Rich,

Welcome to DuraSpaceCrowdVineSomethingButI'mNotSureWhat ;-).

Was just looking over a recent webinar on Islandora. Mark Leggott sent me the link: https://versatile.webex.com/versatile...

We're hopefully that this provides the pieces for us to hook up Drupal to Fedora here at JWA:

An interesting discussion occurred at the end of DSUG09 today. What do people think about the DSpace project having a release manager who is a repository manager (not a developer) for the next release? Would this be a step towards having more repository managers more closely engaged with platform development?
Beth Tillinghast: This is an interesting idea and one worth exploring. I think about our tech projects here in the Library. We always have librarians working as the point-of-contact for projects affecting the services to our users. They, then, work with the technical staff to guide the development of the project.
Stuart Lewis: As one of the proponents of the idea, and the current DSpace release manager, I like the idea. Much of my effort goes on project management and community liaison, which leaves less time for me to use my development skills. The role mainly project management skills so could be taken on by anyone in the community with the sufficient time and skills to do so. There is a small amount of technical input required for actually making the final release happen, so perhaps a joint position held by a developer and a repository manager to ensure full coverage of skills and backgrounds?
Sarah L. Shreeves: I think that a joint position makes sense - you might have some trouble finding a repository manager who's willing to take on this role otherwise (for fear of not being technically fluent enough to understand / translate the issues). I do think that this would help other repo managers feel engaged in the process.

Stan Upchurch posted Duraspace platform?
What is a Duraspace platform? I'm old so please explain in simple terms.
Valorie Hollister: DuraSpace is not a software platform, it is a non-profit organization (http://duraspace.org/index.php). Currently the DuraSpace organization supports 3 open source technologies: DSpace (http://www.dspace.org/), Fedora (http://www.fedora-commons.org/) and Mulgara (http://www.mulgara.org/). DSpace and Fedora are software platforms which are used to create digital repositories. Mulgara is is used for the storage and retrieval of RDF data. Please contact me if help you further.

Would you like to brainstorm about what type of serial publication or new media might be interesting-fascinating-fun and useful by and for the DuraSpace community? Please leave me a note with suggestions for how/when we might talk. I will be at EDUCAUSE Nov. 4-6.

Please post your comments about the Crowdvine tool here -- or email me at val@dspace.org. Comments from DSpace Global Outreach Cmte: 1. It might be helpful to add the Ambassador Regions to the cloud list. 2. Would it be possible to also "activate" the state in user profiles making it easier to track local DSpace users. 3. How well will Crowdvine scale as more people begin to use it and... 4. if Crowdvine is used long term is there...... [read more]
